PREFABRICATION OF FACADE ELEMENTS IN SCANDINAVIA
Written by: Yijia Yin

Abstract
The building industry in Denmark was booming for the past few years. A lot of buildings with elegant architecture design have been built and turned to be landmarks.
For most of us, how the building looks like is a very important factor of evaluating the work from the architects and the contractors. It is very interesting for me to find out how people are building this impressive appearance of the buildings and if there is anything inspiring.
By collecting informations from the Danish Building Regulation, it is clear that energy-saving and sustainability are becoming the basic requirements for façade construction of big buildings. And the rules are set by using the formula of energy frame calculation.
Working with a lot of experienced architects in the architecture company SITE A/S, I also learned how the architects, clients, and contractors are working together to manage the construction project. The demands from the client, based on the investment, the ability from architects of creating impressive façade, and the development of construction method from the contractors make it possible to produce qualified façade construction for buildings.
Additionally Scandinavia countries also have the tradition of integrating new methods and materials into building industry. It creates an ideal environment for adapting prefabrication of façade elements. By studying 2 building projects in Copenhagen, certain preconditions can be found and the scope of using prefabricated façade elements gets clear.

- The size of the building (both financially and physically) is relevantly bigger ( Aller 18000m2, Horten 9000m2).
- The building is normally usd as office building or types other than a single family house.
- There is a healthy budget for the project.
- The façade design has certain module system, and the façade can be divided into certain types of elements. Each type of elements has identical structure.
- Traditional construction method cannot fulfill the design nor the budget/ time plan.

The new method of construction of façade also brings changes among the project parties. The role of the supplier or the manufacturer turns to be more and more important inside a building project. It also creates more job opportunities in the future.

DOUBLE SKIN FACADE
Written by: Jón Gunnar Hilmarsson

Abstract
This dissertation discusses the double skin façade building component. It describes the concept briefly and
four different typologies are identified for classification. There is a debate of whether or not the double skin façade is environmentally friendly or if it has failed to achieve that goal. Researchers and practitioners have mixed opinion about if the system decreases the energy usage of a building of not. This thesis looks into some detailed researches made to identify the actual energy efficiency of a double skin façade. The results are not unanimous bet some conclusions can be made by analyzing those studies. The cost efficiency is also analyzed in details to try to identify if the system is an economically viable solution. Then other benefits that can be achieved by utilizing the double skin façade are compared to the conventional façade. The aim of this thesis is to identify whether the double skin façade is a viable alternative for buildings. Numerous factors are identified and compared to conventional façade and all this is summarized in the conclucion.
